American Patchwork and Quilting – Weathervane Quilt – Issue 187

This is a presale item. We expect to ship in mid-February.

As a longtime admirer, I was thrilled when Joanna Figueroa from Fig Tree and Co. reached out this summer to invite me to participate in a special project. Joanna is organizing a new series of articles for AMERICAN PATCHWORK & QUILTING magazine. Each feature includes an interview with a modern designer, exploring their perspective on what constitutes a ‘modern’ quilt. For each article, Joanna and the featured designer select a well-known quilt block and create their own quilts, each interpreting the block in their unique style. The articles will showcase both quilts side by side and include instructions for both versions. The interviews offer an interesting look into the designers’ views on the relationship between traditional and modern quilting.

Joanna and I chose the Weathervane block – a personal favorite! Amy (AG Studio Manager) and I had a great time designing and assembling this strikingly bold version using Chrysanthemum and Andover Century Solids. We’re particularly fond of how the use of a black solid accentuates certain parts of the blocks as foreground, allowing the rest to form a beautiful color gradation in the background.

Weathervane quilt kit available here.
